| "A partir de observaciones hidrográficas de corrientes e imágenes de satélite obtenidas del 7 al 19 de septiembre de 1992, se analiza la variabilidad en escala de tiempo de días de un giro anticiclónico localizado en bahía Sebastián Vizcaíno. Los resultados de este trabajo indican que durante septiembre de 1992 hubo una estrecha relación entre la manifestación superficial de un giro de agua cálida en el interior de bahía Sebastián Vizcaíno y la intensificación o relajamiento de la surgencia al norte de la bahía frente a punta Baja. Durante episodios de viento intenso del noroeste, el giro estuvo delimitado por marcados gradientes de temperatura superficial, generados por advección de agua de baja temperatura que ascendió a la superficie frente a punta Baja y fue transportada hacia el interior de la bahía. En periodos del orden de días, el diámetro del giro fluctuó entre 55 y 75 km y su profundidad entre 40 y 55 m; estas fluctuaciones estuvieron asociadas con variaciones en la intensidad del viento. Una característica sobresaliente del campo de viento en el interior de la bahía fue la generación de una zona de calmas al suroeste de isla de Cedros en presencia de vientos del noroeste. El rotacional del esfuerzo del viento resultante de tal distribución produce una convergencia en el transporte de Ekman, el cual, de acuerdo con los resultados recientes de un modelo barotrópico aplicado a bahía Sebastián Vizcaíno (Palacios et al., en preparación), es el mecanismo responsable de la generación del giro anticiclónico. Las observaciones realizadas indican que también existe una importante respuesta baroclínica en esta convergencia del transporte de Ekman." "Hydrographic observations of currents and satellite images obtained from 7 to 19 September 1992 were used to analyze variability, on a time scale of days, of a anticyclonic eddy located in Bahía Sebastián Vizcaíno. The results indicate that during September 1992 there was a close relationship between the superficial manifestation of a warm-water eddy in the interior of Bahía Sebastián Vizcaíno and the intensitication or relaxing of the upwelling to the north of the bay off Punta Baja. During episodes of intense wind from the northwest, the eddy was delimited by marked gradients of surface temperature, generated by the advection of low-temperature water that rose to the surface in Punta Baja and was transported towards the interior of the bay. During periods on the order of days, the diameter of the eddy fluctuated between 55 and 75 km and its depth between 40 and 55 m; these fluctuations were associated with variations in the wind intensity. A noteworthy characteristic of the wind tield in the interior of the bay was the generation of a calm zone to the southwest of Isla de Cedros when winds from the northwest were present. The wind stress curl resulting from that distribution produces a convergence in the Ekman transport, which, according to the recent results of a barotropic model applied to Bahía Sebastián Vizcaíno (Palacios et al., in preparation), is the mechanism responsible for generating the anticyclonic eddy. The observations made indicate that there also exists an important baroclinic response to this convergence of the Ekman transport." | |
